The purpose of this project was to provide sufficient route enhancements in order for freight traffic that currently uses the East Coast Main Line (ECML) between Peterborough and Doncaster to be diverted onto the Great Northern / Great Eastern (GNGE) joint line, thus releasing paths on the ECML for additional passenger services and reducing overall traffic to improve passenger journey times.

The scheme was part of a ¬£280m improvement programme managed by Network Rail. Tier One Commercial Management’s involvement regarded the design FTN Fibre Requirements for the signalling interlocking islands, installation and testing of fibre optic cable and the design and installation of telephone concentrators to tie-in to the new modular signalling system.

Tier One Commercial Management were engaged by the client to provide project Quantity Surveying support, controlling cost and maximising value for the successful delivery of all works.

The improvement works have been heralded as a great success, reducing the journey time between Peterborough and Doncaster by 17 minutes, aided by a line speed increase from 60mph to 75mph and embracing technology to produce an asset with a reduced need for heavy maintenance for up to 15 years.
